Yaupon Tea Caffeine Content

So, how does the caffeine content of yaupon compare to coffee or tea?

This is one of the most common questions we get asked. And for good reason. You need to know what effect it’s going to have on you. Some are looking for the strongest kick possible, and others are sensitive to the smallest amounts of caffeine.

Well, the answer depends on how you make it! If you make it according to the instructions on our packaging, at about one teaspoon or tea bag per cup, the caffeine content is similar to a cup of green tea. It has a mild, energizing and uplifting effect, but doesn’t give you the spike or crash that coffee gives. But you can also make it stronger, at around a tablespoon per cup, to get more of a kick. We've also enjoyed it in the same style as traditional yerba mate, which uses many tablespoons of loose leaf, and it becomes pretty powerful. Yaupon contains between 0.65 - 0.85% caffeine by weight.  Coffee is about 1.1% caffeine by weight.

Our customers have told us that yaupon makes them feel productive, energized, and focused. Some have called it brain-enhancing. We also have customers that are sensitive to caffeine but can drink yaupon. We like to say that yaupon gives a focused jitter-free buzz.

We think the magic is actually in the balance of caffeine and theobromine. In addition to caffeine, yaupon also contains theobromine, which most people know from chocolate. Theobromine is similar to caffeine, but has a milder effect. And its uplifting effect is one of the reasons chocolate is known as an aphrodisiac. Theobromine has health benefits as well!
